Day 25

I wasn't sure what I was going to shoot today and then I saw the lawnmower going by out front. I thought I would try freezing the grass clippings and got this. I like the way it looks like it is not moving yet there are grass clippings in the air.

Then I tried for the sense of motion and got the following shot.

Day 24

Copyright Peter Mitchell

I went on a photo walk today, part of the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk. I took a variety of shots but I tended towards the closeups and ended up getting behind. As usual it was hard to narrow the choices down to just one to post. I like the way this almost seems to be coming out of a yellow mist.

More experimenting with water. It looks like a collision of drops created this one.

Day 22

Copyright Peter Mitchell

I did some more experimenting with water today. Different ways to create splashes. What initially looked good on the camera screen didn't look as good on the computer. So there wasn't much to choose from today. I'll have to try again.

The raspberries are ripening quickly!

Most of the photos I have posted, and plan to post, have been untouched. It is a challenge to get the framing in camera. But I also need to learn how to crop when it would be better. So I decided to crop this image since it had a dried stem on each side. I thought it looked better like this.

There was a nice dew on the grass this morning so I went out first thing. I got a few shots I like but I was finding it hard to choose one. I like the richness of the colours in the first shot and like it even without the drop of water being really sharp. The second I like because the drop of water is sharp and everything else is out of focus.

I thought the contrast between the hard, sharp edges of razor wire and the curved "soft" shapes was interesting.

We wandered around Prince's Island and the edge of downtown Calgary today. I like the distorted reflection of this building in the windows of another downtown building.

Here is a cropped version.

Day 16

Copyright Peter Mitchell

Went to the Calgary Stampede today for the first time. I didn't have my DSLR with me so I took a few shots with my point and shoot. It was really difficult to take any action shots with the delay between pictures. I decided to post this one of the chuck wagon races.

Day 15

We were on our way down to Calgary this afternoon and got stopped by construction on the highway. These storm clouds were moving in as we left Edmonton and I had been watching them but they were still a ways off to the west. It was blue sky and sunny to the south. I looked back just as the traffic started moving again and this is what it looked like. I couldn't hop out and with the construction it was really not the place to pull over so I took a quick shot out the window.

Day 13

It seemed to alternate between pouring rain and drizzle all day today. I thought I would do another indoor shot but then the sun came out for a while. I didn't even make it to the end of the alley before it closed in again but I got a few shots in.

Day 12

More rain again today so it seemed like a good time to try something inside. I set up a piece of plexiglass with some black cloth under it and then set this prism/ornament on it.

Day 10

Tried some action shots today and was not completely happy with any one image. A lot of the images I liked for the body position had some fingers, a foot, or part of an arm cut out of the frame. And when the body was completely in the frame I didn't always like the overall shape. This was harder than I thought it would be.

I didn't plan on shooting flowers again today, but since that is what I was seeing today while I was out I went with it. I was finding it really hard to decide on an image for today but I decided that I wanted something brighter and yellow. So this is the one I chose.

Day 7

I've been experimenting with water a lot recently and really like the different results that can be obtained. This image was done with a macro lens focusing on water drops sprayed onto a piece of plexiglass and placed in front of a yarrow plant.

I have included a second image below that is more abstract. Since I couldn't decide on just one of these two images I have included both.

Day 6

Carrying on with the flower theme. We have a lot of yarrow in our yard and this stalk had been pushed over by the wind and rain of the last couple of days.

Day 5

I wanted to try capturing the wind blowing the branches while having part of the photo remain sharp and in focus. I like the way the mock orange blossoms blur in this image but I couldn't slow the shutter speed as much as I wanted and it is not that interesting. I think I will have to look into ND filters and try again another day with a more interesting background.

Day 4

Arrived back in Edmonton this afternoon to some rain. Took this photo of a mock orange bush in our backyard after the rain had passed and the sun started to come out again.

Happy Canada Day!

Headed to Saskatoon for the weekend and took in the fireworks.
