Day 123

© Peter Mitchell
Another frosty morning. I went out just as the sun was rising and passed a playground where a teeter-totter caught my eye. So I stopped and shot a number of different angles on the different playground equipment. This shot is the top of the swing set frame.

Day 121

We headed out to Mulhurst Bay after work today. It had been foggy and overcast most of the day but it started to clear after we left. Mulhurst Bay is just over an hour from Edmonton and the light was great as we passed these fields.

Day 120

The snow we had is just about gone now. This is what is left of an icicle on our garage.

Day 119

© Peter Mitchell
The snow on our garage roof has been melting which started some icicles forming. As this has been happening the snow has also started to slowly slide off the roof curving down with the weight. This has caused the icicles to angle in and then continue to form down, so it looks really interesting.

Day 118

© Peter Mitchell
A raspberry leaf with the first snow. It has been overcast for a few days and looks like it will be for most of the week. This makes it more challenging to get a photo since I start work when it is still dark so I can't go out before work and by the time I am done the sun, if you could see it, is very low in the sky. So there is not much daylight left to get out and shoot in.

Day 115

© Peter Mitchell
The day seemed to pass too quickly and I had not planned anything for a photo. So I tried a portrait shot again with the faint light from an iPad. This time though I put a faint light behind and I think it worked better. But exporting to post on the web has darkened the image. I am going to have to learn the proper adjustments for exporting.

Day 112

I didn't get out until after the sun went down again today. As the days get shorter that is going to happen more often.

Day 111

On my walk today I stopped at a few spruce trees that had these large cones and I took some photos. Some had clear pitch that was dripping over the cones that was interesting, but I liked the simple pattern of this image.

Day 110

© Peter Mitchell
I tried a portrait by the light of an iPad. It didn't turn out very well, it is too dark, but all the brighter ones I didn't like. This is the image I liked the most. I'll need to learn more about lighting.

Day 109

© Peter Mitchell
I went to Hawrelak Park in Edmonton this morning before sunrise to take photos of the ducks. I took a lot of shots from before the sun was up until after it had risen. I haven't really had time to go through to select all the ones I like, but I decided to post this one since I like the duck and it's reflection as well as the swirling patterns in the water.

Here are a few more images.

Day 108

I went out to a bird sanctuary west of the city today. Most of the water has dried up and there were only a few ducks at the far side. So no bird images today.

Day 107

© Peter Mitchell
I rented a Canon 100-400 L series lens for the weekend, mostly to try some wildlife photography and to see what a "pro" series lens was like. The 400mm range is more than what I have, but I think I would like to try a 600mm lens for birds. Although I've just used this lens for maybe an hour.

I went out to Cooking Lake, south east of Edmonton, and when I got there I didn't see any birds at first. I know it is late in the year but I was hoping to see some birds. When I started looking I found a few shore birds close by, but any larger birds seemed to be across the lake. I'll have to try another location tomorrow.

Day 105

After photographing the LRT to capture the motion a while back I've been thinking of the LRT bridge and wanted to capture the train crossing it at night. With another long day at work and the earlier sunset, today seemed like a good day to try this shot. This shows the old High Level bridge which has a level for cars with a train track above, and the LRT bridge just upriver of it with a train crossing (although you probably wouldn't know what it is) with a pedestrian walkway suspended below that.

When I was raking leaves today I found a couple of feathers. I got my camera and took a bunch of shots. Here are a few.

Day 99

© Peter Mitchell
It was a beautiful fall day today. I went out and laid down in the backyard with my macro lens and looked at what was around me. I really like doing this as you can probably gather from the number of close-up images I've posted.

If you click on the dandelion image above you will be able to see the detail a little better in the larger image.

The image below shows a tiny flower. I don't think the whole leaf that you see a part of in the lower right corner is much bigger than my thumb.

We are staying in Mulhurst Bay on Pigeon Lake this weekend. We went back to this dock at sunset.

Earlier in the day we had stopped at the same dock.

Here is another photo of the table and chairs that I took last week. I think there are less leaves on the trees. I wonder if they will still be there when the snow starts to fall.
