Day 31 - Stotan Falls

© Peter Mitchell

Rode out to Stotan Falls today and took this from the bridge. The has been a popular spot in the summer with the larger falls downstream past the island, but it is not possible to go down to it since this is all private land and the owner/developer has closed it to the public.

Day 28 - Old Mill

© Peter Mitchell

This was built to be a rough lumber mill in 1912-1913 and even though it was fully equipped it was never used. The source I read says it is not clear why, but eventually some of the equipment was moved to a new mill in Courtenay. I ended up choosing this image to post because I liked how, on first glance, it appears the upper wall is transparent and I feel like I am seeing the patterns of trees and leaves.

More graffiti images

Here are a few more images from the mine sites and old mill site. Click on any image to see it larger.

Day 26 - "Beautiful"

© Peter Mitchell

The front bumper still has the top part of the license plate which says "Beautiful", all that is left of the full saying on our license plates which is "Beautiful British Columbia".

Day 25 - In the Clouds

© Peter Mitchell

We went up the mountain for a snowshoe today and the visibility changed a lot as the clouds and light snow moved over us.

Day 24 - Snowflake Trails

© Peter Mitchell

We had our first real snowfall of the year today, at our elevation by the coast, and I played around with moving the camera while capturing the falling snow. This is shot towards a dark fence.

Went to Goose Spit this morning to climb the stairs; this is from part way up.

Day 22 - Hair Ice

© Peter Mitchell

I looked this up online and found it was called hair ice, also known as ice wool or frost beard. We saw a lot of it today during a morning hike. (Click on the photo for a larger version.)

Day 21 - Cumberland Japanese Cemetery

© Peter Mitchell

I went out to look for some of the other Cumberland mine sites but didn't find anything to photograph like at the previous days sites. So I cycled past the Cumberland Japanese Cemetery and took this shot. It is all treed now and this tree is pushing one of the border stones out of place. (Click on the photo for a larger version.)

Day 20 - No. 4 Mine

© Peter Mitchell

More concrete and graffiti. Today my wife and I walked to the No. 4 mine, which is near Comox Lake, and I used this image because she is in the opening and it gives a sense of scale.

Day 19 - No. 7 Mine Remains

© Peter Mitchell

Today I went to the remains of the No. 7 Mine. There are two different concrete structures and one of them has multiple walls, windows, doors, and lots of colourful graffiti, which provided a number of nice images with the colour against the concrete and moss. But I went with this image because I liked that the artwork was more subdued and interesting.

Day 18 - Mine Remains

© Peter Mitchell

Today I went for a bike ride and stopped at these mine remains, the No. 8 Mine. The graffiti is continually changing. It is all surrounded by trees now and with an overcast sky today there was a nice diffused lighting.

Day 17 - Weir

© Peter Mitchell

I liked the way the water looked flowing through this weir on a salmon channel along the Puntledge River.

Day 16 - Playhouse

© Peter Mitchell

I have been wanting to do more B&W and thought that would work for this image.

Day 15 - Snow Scene

Went up to the snow for a morning snowshoe.

Day 14 - Another Focus Stack

© Peter Mitchell

Another day using focus stacking. When using focus stacking on my camera it captures 8 separate images and then combines them in-camera. But it also saves a jpeg and raw file for each image. So I tried using the 8 raw images to focus stack myself in post processing and found that I preferred the in-camera stacked image. I know there is more control doing the stacking in post processing, but I'm happy with the in-camera results and it is much easier.

Day 13 - Focus Stacking 2

© Peter Mitchell

I spotted some flowers tucked in to these cedar shakes so I tried some more in-camera focus stacking. I did them hand held instead of using a tripod and I was happy with how well they turned out.

I was experimenting with in-camera focus stacking.

Day 11 - Well Worn

© Peter Mitchell

I liked the way this old fallen tree looked where many feet have worn away a small section.

Day 10 - Grey Day

© Peter Mitchell

It was such a grey day, I hardly took any shots today. I had been told that the image stabilization system in the camera I am using could get good results with long exposures hand held. I was sceptical but I thought this image was okay for hand held at 0.8s.

Day 9 - Reflection

© Peter Mitchell

This is a reflection that I rotated around. I liked that on first glance it looks like it is shot from low down looking up at the structure, but on closer examination you can see the water and leaves below the surface that blend really nicely to look like the siding.

Day 8 - Panorama

© Peter Mitchell

Went up to the old ski area on Forbidden Plateau and took this; looking over Courtenay/Comox on the left to Denman Island on the right.

Day 7 - Bamboo Abstract

© Peter Mitchell

I experimented again with the camera movement on a different patch of bamboo, this time using a tripod.

Day 6 - Snowshoeing on the mountain

© Peter Mitchell

We went snowshoeing up the mountain today and were the first into this area with the fresh snow. Hard work breaking trail even with the long snowshoes, but it was worth it.

Day 5 - Bamboo

© Peter Mitchell

Today I played with moving the camera while taking pictures of this bamboo. This is just camera movement and some post processing, not a painterly filter that was applied, but I thought it has the feeling of a drawing.

Day 3 - Our Christmas 'Tree'

© Peter Mitchell

This was our Christmas tree this past season and the decorations are about to be packed away, so I took this this morning.

Day 2 - Corkscrew Hazel

I decided to try another 365 project so here is day 1, a wet start to a new year.
