Day 90 - New Leaf

© Peter Mitchell

I think this is a poplar. I've been enjoying the macro work but I think I will have to try something different tomorrow.

Day 89 - Larch

© Peter Mitchell

The larch needles are starting to grow.

Day 88 - Feather

© Peter Mitchell

I was out testing a lens that had dropped to the ground when my camera broke and was just doing a bunch of quick shots. I ended up liking this image more than others I had done today with more purpose.

Day 87 - Willow

© Peter Mitchell

I like the way the leaves curl around as these willow buds open up. So many interesting things for macro shots.

Day 86 - Red Maple

© Peter Mitchell

I was told this is called witch-hazel. It looks like it is covered in little pom-poms. (Correction, I was told this is a red maple.)

Day 85 - Hairy Leaf Buds

© Peter Mitchell

I thought it was interesting how hairy these are as they are opening up. Focus stacked macro.

Day 84 - Old Leaf

© Peter Mitchell

All the leaves on this tree dried in the fall but didn't fall off. I don't know if that is common for this type of tree (I haven't found out what type it is). I thought it showed nice lines and patterns with the sun backlighting.

Day 83 - Pussy Willow

© Peter Mitchell

I have never looked closely at these before once they start to flower out. This was taken using in camera focus stacking with my point and shoot.

Day 82 - Emerging

© Peter Mitchell

I don't know whether it is considered a bush or tree (maybe someone knows the name for this?), but this flower and leaves was only one of a few coming out.

Foot bridge on the Canyon View Trail, Campbell River, BC.

Day 80 - Fresh Cut

© Peter Mitchell

A number of trees have been cut at a local campground for what looked to be either clean up of blow-downs or to remove dead and dangerous trees so they don't fall on a campsite. I don't know about this particular tree as it doesn't seem to fit either of those categories.

Day 79 - Red-winged blackbird

© Peter Mitchell

I did not have much to choose from today. I had just gone out and after 3 photos the camera mount thread ripped out of my camera leaving a big hole in the bottom. (I had a shoulder strap attached to that spot.) So this was really it for the day.

Day 78 - Flash Test

© Peter Mitchell

I have hardly ever used a flash before and a local photo club I'm in set a project to learn more about flash. So I started experimenting today and I set up in this corner so I could bounce the flash off the wall on the left. It took a few tries to not get any shadow on the wall behind.

Day 77 - Bench #5

© Peter Mitchell

The last bench photo in this series.

Day 76 - Bench #4

© Peter Mitchell

This is a very small patch of lichen over a screw head, you can see the circular shape where the screw is recessed in the board. No bigger than a quarter.

Day 75 - Bench #3

© Peter Mitchell

The little patch of moss on the right is the size of a quarter, and you can just make out the screw head in the centre.

Day 74 - Bench #2

© Peter Mitchell

Today's shot is a close-up on a bench seat board. To give a bit of a sense of scale and how small the moss is, the board is just over 2 inches wide, which is top to bottom in this image.

Day 73 - Bench #1

© Peter Mitchell

I think there may be another macro or two from this old bench in our backyard, therefore the #1 in the title.

Day 70 - Fishing Boat

© Peter Mitchell

The herring run has started but there was not a lot of activity where we were walking this morning. Saw a few more boats to the east and we heard that the herring and boats moved south a little later in the day.

Day 69 - Lichen

© Peter Mitchell

I found on the Canadian Museum of Nature Blog that this is called Oak Moss, but it is actually a lichen. This was just a small piece on a twig that had dropped to the ground.

Day 67 - Snowscape

© Peter Mitchell

There is fresh snow on the mountain and although it is heavier and perfect for making snowballs, it made for a nice snowshoe.

Day 66 - Fly

© Peter Mitchell

I spotted this fly that appeared to be stuck in a bucket of water this morning (already there, no flies were hurt in the making of this photo), and I thought it would be a good subject for a macro shot. You can see the front two sets of legs on the water surface, but the back leg has broken through the water tension. Along with a big water drop on it's back, maybe that is why it was stuck. If you zoom in you can see the texture on it's eyes, which I find fascinating.

After taking a few shots I lifted it out to the edge of the bucket and a while later it flew off.

Day 65 - The Path Less Travelled

© Peter Mitchell

I experimented with the multiple exposure setting in my camera today. This is two different zoom settings on this section of the path and I liked the way it makes it look like the path forks, with the left fork being a little more mysterious.

Day 64 - Fading Away

© Peter Mitchell

An experiment to combine four images in post processing. After exporting I see where I could do better, but overall I like the way it turned out.

Day 63 - Hazelnut

© Peter Mitchell

I'm thinking this is a hazelnut as there are some hazelnut trees on the property.

Day 62 - At the Beach

© Peter Mitchell

I don't often end up at this beach at low tide so it was nice to see all the exposed sand to walk on. It is a mostly rocky beach at high tide. It was windy today and I thought the clouds were really interesting.

Day 61 - Tree

© Peter Mitchell

I went back to this tree today because the lines are so interesting and I wanted to try some different shots.

Day 60 - Fern

© Peter Mitchell

I was taking shots of the worm patterns in this rotting tree and when I walked around it this fern frond caught my eye. I got one shot off and then a light puff of wind blew it away from the tree.
