Day 92

© Peter Mitchell
Yesterday I thought I would try something different and try to capture leaves falling from the trees. But there wasn't a lot of wind, not the number of leaves falling at one time like the day before, so I didn't end up with a lot. Today I decided to just throw some in the air and capture that. But I didn't really get much. Oh well, another day...

Day 91

The leaves are changing and falling fast. There isn't a lot of red, but what there is has seemed to fade really quickly. I thought I would try some photos of our dog leaping out of a pile of leaves. Some of them turned out okay but I liked this one more of her sitting in the pile.

Day 90

I hadn't taken a photo yet for the day and the sun was setting, so I stopped downtown on my way home from an errand and wandered for a few blocks and took this shot.

This is a bush in our backyard, I'm not sure what it is, that is beautiful in the fall.

We stayed at a place in Mulhurst Bay on Pigeon Lake last night. This morning I noticed this table and chairs in the woods behind the house.

I took a walk down our alley this afternoon and passed this spruce covered in leaves from a tree beside it.

Yesterday I was driving down this street just as the sun was hitting the horizon and there was an amazing glow of light. I didn't have a camera with me yesterday so I thought I would try again today. There was some cloud cover so it was off and on for a bit, eventually coming through with a bit of a glow. But it never got as bright as I remembered it from yesterday when the sun was right down at the end of the street on the horizon.

Day 84

This morning the moon was setting just before sunrise. (I had checked a few days ago and thought it would be a good project.) So I headed out and lined the moon up over the Legislature building. It is a bit dark still, but click on the image to see a larger version.

I set a candle in a container of water for this image. I like the way the wax flowed out over the water.

Day 82

Well it did rain again today so I went out with my tripod and worked on getting more depth of field on the leaves to compare to yesterdays shots. I chose this shot because it had the depth while still shooting at an angle.

Day 81

Gray, rainy and cold again. So I went out and shot some of the leaves on the sidewalk. I want to try again but use my tripod next time and see how they look with more depth of field.

I don't have much today. I helped make this large drum head today and I realized I wasn't likely to get out to photograph anything after we were done. So I took this shot of the drum head as we were working on it. It is a 4 foot diameter ring with a cow hide stretched over it.

It was 6 below zero this morning, much too soon for that, but we finally had a sunny day. I thought this little dragon figure might look good among some yellow leaves.

Leaves that are already changing, after dark, lit by a streetlight.

I went back to the Muttart Conservatory this evening with my tripod and shot this. I had looked at these glass railings on a previous visit but didn't have my tripod that time. I like the way the reflection of one pyramids is above another that you can see through the glass.

This is a head of butter lettuce we bought at the farmer's market. This is sold as "living" lettuce since they leave a root bundle on it so you can set it in a bowl of water. We can leave it on the counter for the week as we use it, which has been working out nicely.

I've always liked the shadows these leave cast in our dining room. This window faces east so gets the morning sun. The curtains were closed this morning and caught my eye so I decided to photograph them while there are still leaves.

Day 73

I was finding it hard to get motivated or inspired today. I went out as the sun was setting and wandered for a while without taking any shots. I tried a few different shots at this location, this being one where I was focusing on the grass and letting the sky blur a little.

Day 72

It was grey and rainy most of the day but we did get a few periods of sun. I took a few shots of a flower with raindrops still on it and then took this one just before the sun was covered by clouds again.

It was raining most of the day today so I decided to go back to the apple tree in our backyard and I got this shot of raindrops on an apple.

Day 69

The apple tree in our backyard is about ready to fall over. Half of it is dead with the trunk just about split in two. But we don't want to get rid of it until we know what we would replace it with and it keeps producing apples.

I went to Hawrelak Park this morning and found feathers in the grass with dew drops on them. I was having a hard time deciding what image to post today so I ended up going with one that I cropped square since it was a little different.

The beginning of September and some leaves are already changing. The sun is shinning through this leaf and casting a shadow of a branch on it.

Day 66

Well I went back to the Legislature this morning for sunrise. I wanted to see what it was like at sunrise as opposed to sunset. I took a bunch of shots at the reflecting pool again in front of the Legislature. I found that my widest lens was not wide enough to capture the whole reflection without turning it into portrait orientation. I would have needed to move back, which was not a problem, but I probably would have needed to be up 8 to 10 feet.

I did some shots that I have stitched together as a panorama but being that close to the building really distorts it. I really liked some of the images with the first sun and while the lights were still on. But as I was leaving I passed this open space and thought it was a really nice, so I parked the car again and took a few shots here. So here is sunrise on the Alberta Legislature.

Day 65

I went back to the Legislature grounds this evening because I wanted to shoot this waterfall while the sun was still high enough. It turned out that the trees were shading most of it already. I wanted to try blurring the water to get a softer effect but after getting back home and looking on the computer I think I would need to go with an even longer exposure. Something to try another day.

Day 64

I went to the Legislature this evening because I wanted to see what the setting sun was like on the building. I wasn't sure what the angle would be like this time of year and there are some office and condo/apartment towers to the west that cast shadows. It was a beautiful evening for wandering the grounds and taking photos.

I'm thinking earlier in the year may be better since the sun would be further to the north, as long as it wouldn't be blocked by the buildings. But I still like this one with the reflecting pool.

Here are a couple of closer details on the west side of the building. The sun was lower at this point.

A couple of granite rocks I have found over the years. I set them up by a window with the evening sun shining on them. I think it shows better without so much white around, it is easier to see some of the detail.
